Wisconsin breweries can now serve liquor and wine. Here’s what some local spots have planned

Milwaukee breweries can now serve more than just the alcohol they produce, thanks to an overhaul of the state's laws that govern the making, distribution and sales of alcoholic beverages that passed in 2023.

The previous system prevented breweries from selling alcohol they did not produce, which meant they typically couldn't sell wine and liquor. (Brewpubs like Explorium typically had a different type of license that allowed them to serve a full bar.)

Now, however, breweries can apply to the state to sell liquor and wine in their taprooms, and a handful in the Milwaukee area have already done so or have plans to.

Enlightened Brewing Company, 2020 S. Allis St., rolled out a new drink menu on June 5 that includes canned cocktails and wine.

Co-owner Tommy Vandervort said he got approval from the state about two days after he applied on May 1.
